- Thermodynamics is that branch of science which deals with energy transfer
- A system may be closed, open or isolated system
- A homogeneous system is one which consists of a single phase
- A heterogeneous system is one which consists of two or more phases.
- A property of a system is a characteristic of the system which depends upon its state, but not upon how the state is reached
- Intensive properties do not depend on the mass of the system
- Extensive properties depend on the mass of the system.
- When a path is completely specified then the change of state is called a process.
- A system is in thermodynamic equilibrium if there is no change in any thermodynamic properties of a system where it is isolated from its surroundings
- A quasi static process can be viewed as a sufficiently slow process which allows the system to adjust itself internally so that properties in one part of the system do not change any faster than those at other parts. .
- The energy which crosses the system boundaries is called transient energy
- Temperature is an intensive property of a thermodynamic system. -
- At absolute zero temperature the volume of a gas becomes zero
- The absolute scale related to Celsius scale is known as Kelvin -scale.
